David has edited books in a broad range of genres, from computer science to writing reference and science fiction. With an MBA from NYU Stern, he is well versed in strategy, finance, law, economics, operations, and statistics. The bulk of his career has been devoted to helping consultants (generally in the IT and software development industries) put their ideas into words, moving from teaching and speaking to high-quality writing.
Beyond the mechanics and art of editing, David works on strategy: He can help align the text with its target audience, lay the groundwork for endorsements, manage permissions, improve translatability, cut production costs, and more.
Recommendations from Authors
“In my career as a book author, spanning fifty years and more than forty titles, I’ve worked with many editors. David is among the few I most trust to take care of my words. Since 1992, I’ve published 13 books with him. In all stages of the process—from editing to marketing—he has contributed to my books’ success, even when that meant more work in the short-term. At conferences, I’ve seen him sell my books and take good care of my readers, too. I recommend him to my colleagues and clients for editing and marketing projects. He’s a terrific guy.”
—Gerald M. Weinberg, Weinberg & Weinberg, on work for Dorset House Publishing“David was my principal editor at Dorset House when I published my first book. He is outstanding! OK, annoying to an author who thinks too highly of his own writing, but outstanding nonetheless. He is excellent at identifying vague sentences and at helping clarify ones that are, shall we say, less than clear. While it’s a bit of a jolt to get back a manuscript with that many red marks, they are (nearly always) spot on. Thanks to him my book was way better written than it would have been without him. As the author, I get the credit publically, but it is to his credit as well.”
—David Hay, Essential Strategies Consulting, on work for Dorset House Publishing“David is one of the finest editors I know. He was instrumental in editing two of my Dorset House books, plus a book of essays and several print and online articles. He also wrote numerous sales flyers that have helped to sell my books. I can’t say that it’s fun to have your oh-so-carefully-chosen words ‘ripped to shreds’ (that’s how I think of it), but in each case, the difference between what I submitted and what David transformed it into was all the difference in the world. Because of his editing, I have become a better writer. Plus, he is a joy to work with and easy to trust—and we have had a bundle of laughs working together. If you’re looking for editorial assistance, I enthusiastically recommend him.”
